Comment on : Guidelines For Design of Online Questionnaires

-          Dated 2005 à that's 6 year's ago – a lot has happened then in the media space.

-          How many online questionaires are from a panel, vs from a probability sample

-          How many course participants are members of online survey panels / have completed online survey.

-          For online questionniares, sampling error can arise when all but a small portion of the anticipated respondent set is alienated (and so fails to respond) as a result of disregard for varying connection speeds, bandwidth limitations.

o   What does this statement mean

§  Can't measure sampling error from non-probability survey

-          Author's commitment to design (not) à look at first paragraph for section 3.

-          None of the guidelines are particularly innovative in their own right.

-          What is novel – fact that applicable guidelines from these disparate sources have been collated into a unified set, which is presented methodically in order to comprehensively support on line questionaire design.

-          Not adviseable to use "magnitude estimate questions" online because they are generally effective only when researcher is physically present to explain how to use such questions.

-          Didn't mention (as far as I could see) use of progress meter)

More Thumbs Down On Eye Candy in Surveys - 2009

-          Preference for plain text over rich text

-          Rich text à chosen by lifestyle group à online savy

-          Main difference : slider bars vs radio buttons

-          Higher straight lining on plain text à but are sliders any better

-          Best approach à let respondents chose interface, although that may not be practical.

Trying Hard to Engage

-          Bad questionnaire design

-          Try and emulate face to face experience

-          Use avatar – people are not fooled into thinking it's a person

Kiss

-          web survey should behave like every other web application

GW Comment

-          Mish mash of points (dogs dinner)

-          Design of article itself is poor à doesn't give author much "design" cred.

-          Can I find more recent article about design of online questionnaires.

-          Design of online questionnaires could benefit from theory of visualisation ??like that driving ggplot2.

-          Check handbook of surveys.

-          Check survey blog / other blogs

-          What is example of outstanding online questionnaire
