Measuring the Occurrence of Disease : Mortality

Gourdis: Chapter 4 :

Measures of Mortality

-          mortality rates

total deaths / midpoint population

-          age specific death rate

-          disease or cause specific death rate

number of deaths from disease in year / midyear population

-          case facility rate

percentage of people diagnosed as having certain disease who die

è denominator : at risk versus having the disease

-          Proportionate mortality

number of deaths from disease / total deaths

-          Years of potential life lost

-          mortality

o   good reflection of incidence rate under two conditions

§  case fatality is high

§  duration of disease (survival) is short

-          Problems with mortality data

o   underlying cause

-          comparing mortality in different populations

o   age is single most important predictor of mortality

o   can adjust for

§  age

§  sex

§  socioeconomic status

-
